1880 - Olivia L’Ange Porter Shipp was born on this day. A bassist, cellist, pianist and a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. She spent most of her professional life in New York, where she worked as a musician from until the 1950s. She is best known for organizing the Negro Women’s Orchestral and Civic Association in New York in the 1920's and 1930's. She passed away in 1980 in New York City at 100 years of age.
