1914 - Neliska (Baby) Briscoe was born on this day. A dancer, entertainer and bandleader and a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. She got her nickname from being the only child entertainer in the floor show, of the Alley. According to banjo player Danny Barker, the Alley was “a very popular gambling house and cabaret." Her dance career began to merge into a band directing career when Joe Robichaux remade his band for a stint at the New Orleans Rhythm Club. She became the bandleader for the all female group the Harlem Playgirl's in 1938 until about 1942, when she retired from the road to raise her daughters. She passed away in 1994 at the age of 80. |
