| 1971 - Today was very sad in New Orleans and the jazz world as 'Satchmo' Louis Armstrong died of a heart attack in New York at the age of sixty-nine. He was one month short of his seventieth birthday.. Said by some to be the first trumpet virtuoso improviser in the history of Jazz. He began his career in Storyville and was the protégé of the great Joe 'King' Oliver. Along with Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton, Armstrong put New Orleans on the map as the cradle of Jazz. |
