1940 - Johnny Dodds, clarinetist, dies in Chicago. Born in Waverly, Louisiana, but grew up in New Orleans with brother and drummer Warren 'Baby' Dodds. Johnny made a major contribution to King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band and the development of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five. He studied clarinet under Lorenzo Tio, Jr., whose other pupils included Barney Bigard Sidney Bechet and Jimmie Noone. He fronted his own band in Chicago in the 1930's. |
