1948 - Thomas 'Papa Mutt' Carey, traditional jazz cornetist from Hahnville, Louisiana died on this day. Papa Mutt was born in 1891 and was in his brother Jack's Crescent Orchestra early in his career. He worked with all of the legends during his career including Kid Ory, Johnny Dodds and Wade Whaley. In the mid-forties he made network broadcasts with Kid Ory in California, where he died.
