1901Sidney Arodin, Traditional jazz banjo player from New Orleans, Louisiana. During the 1920's, played in the Halfway House Orchestra and the New Orleans Rhythm Masters. He was the composer of 'Up A Lazy River', and was reputed to be the first white musician to record with blacks as part of the Jones-Collins Astoria Eight. Arodin also performed with Sharkey Bonano, Louis Prima and Wingy Manone. He died in New Orleans in February, 1948. (123)

1937Van Broussard, A swamp pop and R&B vocalist from Prairieville, Louisiana. He has performed solo and as Van and Titus, but more recently with the Bayou Boogie Band. During the early years of Broussard's career, his music revolved around Dixieland as he performed in the region of Ascension Parish. During his later years, Broussard put out more than half a dozen albums with CSP, amassing approximately 100 recorded songs for that label alone. His popular singles include "Lord I Need Somebody Bad Tonight" in 1977 and "Feed the Flame" in 1958. The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inducted Broussard in 1997. (87)
1938John Chaffe, Traditional jazz banjo and tuba player from New Orleans, Louisiana. A virtuoso who co-founded the 'Last Straws'. Also recorded with the esteemed Dr. Edmond Souchon, jazz historian. John also played with the Louisiana Repertory Ensemble. he passed away in July 1997 at the age of 59. (86)
1943Evangelos Papthanassiou (aka Vangelis), Pianist and composer most known for his 1981 #1 hit called "Chariots of Fire". (81)
1947Bobby Kimball, Vocalist who was born in Orange, Texas, and was raised in nearby Vinton, Louisiana, Throughout the 1970s, Kimball performed as a vocalist in various New Orleans area bands, including The Levee Band, which would later become Le Roux. He was a founding memberof the rock and popular group called "Toto". They had a number of hits including the 1983 #1 hit "Africa". On May 16, 2010, at the LMHOF Louisiana Music Homecoming in Erwinville, LA, Bobby Kimball was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. (77)
1949Michael Brecker, He was a popular US jazz saxophonist of the post-Coltrane era. He won 13 Grammys as both performer and composer. He played with numerous other jazz atrtists including his brother Randy in 'The Brecker Brothers' and solo. He died on January 13, 2007 from complications associated with leukemia. (75)
1955John Royen, Traditional jazz pianist from Washington, D.C. He was a student of Don Ewell, and was employed at the Gazebo in the French Market in New Orleans. He is a regular player in the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble. (69)

2001 Jeannette Kimball, traditional jazz pianist from New Orleans, Louisiana died on this day at the age of 94. She was born in 1908, and spent most of her musical life with Papa Celestin and his various bands. She played with Celestin musicians after his death, with Bob French in the sixties. She also played with the 'New Camelia Jazz Band' in the eighties. Jeanette died in Charleston, SC.
2003 Placide Adams, jazz bassist and vocalist from New Orleans, Louisiana, and son of bandleader, Dolly Adams passed away on this day at the age of 73. He was also a bandleader, and played with traditional jazz legends, Papa Celestin and George Lewis.
