1894Charles 'Cow Cow' Davenport, He is one of those seldom remembered names in the annals of early blues history. He played an important part in developing one of the most enduring strains of the music; yes, "Cow Cow" Davenport was one hell of a boogie-woogie piano player. He worked on numerous vaudeville tours on the TOBA circuit in the '20s and early '30s, usually in the company of vocalist Dora Carr. While he's principally noted as the composer of his signature tune, "The Cow Cow Boogie," which would be revived by jazz band vocalist Ella Mae Morse during the boogie woogie craze of the early '40s, he also claimed to have written Louis Armstrong's "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You," selling the tune outright and receiving no royalties or composer credits. He recorded for a variety of labels from 1929 to 1946, eventually settling in Cleveland, Ohio, where he died in 1955 of hardening of the arteries. (130)
1895Jimmie Noone, Traditional clarinetist from Cut Off, Louisiana. He studied with Sidney Bechet and Lorenzo Tio, Jr., and played his first real job with Freddie Keppard in Storyville. He then led a band with Buddy Petit, and worked with Kid Ory and Papa Celstin until the district closed in 1917. He migrated to Chicago, and played with King Oliver, Doc Cook and Zutty Singleton before leading his own band at the APEX Club. Jimmie recorded for Decca and Capitol, and was the brother-in-law of Paul Barbarin and Freddie Keppard. Jimmie died in Los Angeles, California on April 19, 1944. (129)

2011Huey P. Meaux, a music producer and a native of Wright, Louisiana passed away on this day at the age of 82. Known as "the Crazy Cajun" work as a disc jockey for KPAC. Under the name Jivin’ Gene, Gene Bourgeois recorded Breaking Up Is Hard to Do, by Meaux, which became a regional hit. Meaux’s breakthrough discovery was Barbara Lynn Ozen from Beaumont. As Barbara Lynn she released You’ll Lose a Good Thing, a No. 8 pop single that topped the R&B charts in 1962. Meaux strung together a remarkable run of Top 40 songs by one-hit wonders like Joe Barry (I’m a Fool to Care) and Rod Bernard (This Should Go on Forever). He helped Freddy Fender resurrect his career with the ballad Before the Last Teardrop Falls, which became a No. 1 pop single in 1975. Meaux also spent time in prison later in life and lived quietly until he passed away. As one local musician told me, “There’s a lot of good and there’s a lot of bad, but you can’t talk about Houston music without talking about Huey Meaux.”
