1944 - Jimmie Noone, traditional clarinetist from Cut Off, Louisiana passed away on this day. He was born in 1895, and studied with Sidney Bechet and Lorenzo Tio, Jr., He played his first real job with Freddie Keppard in Storyville. He then led a band with Buddy Petit, and worked with Kid Ory and Papa Celestin until the district closed in 1917. He migrated to Chicago, and played with King Oliver, Doc Cook and Zutty Singleton before leading his own band at the APEX Club. Jimmie recorded for Decca and Capitol, and was the brother-in-law of Paul Barbarin and Freddie Keppard. Jimmie died in Los Angeles, California. |
